When it comes to writing content, some people love it, while others may find it a bit challenging.

If you are a small business owner, more than likely you are wearing multiple hats - one of which is content creator.  Most visual content requires an element of words to go with it - but how do you know if what you have written has hit the mark, or even makes sense?  Here are 3 starting tips to ensure potent, effective copy.

1. Write as you / people talk.

So often, when we try to create content we pretend we are someone else.  We think about influencers or other business owners who we deem successful and try to mimic them.  Unless you are a skilled copywriter who can ‘become’ the brand they are working for - it is best practice to just be you.  Write as you speak, or as people talk.  Let it all come out, then…..

2. Pop on your audience's hat/lens

Read your words as if you are them.  Does it come across as if you understand and see them and the pressures and problems they have?  As you read it, are there any emotions that are evoked, or thoughts that pop into your head?  How does what you read urge you to act or reflect on a need? Now, take off that hat and…

3. Edit brutally.

Take out the fluff, sharpen up the words, use a synonym dictionary if you feel it is a bit ‘flat’, and dare I say it run it through an AI app such as Grammarly to double-check for consistency and flow.

Pop on your audience hat again and re-read.  This time quickly, as if scrolling through Insta or home page on a website…. does it land?

There are many things to be mindful of when writing for a specific audience, but starting with the above 3 steps, your confidence and consistency will develop in no time. Give it a go and see how your experiences improves.

You’ve got this.
